Compare and Contrast the Purnell Model and Cultural Competence Approach
Assessment:
Similarities: Both models take many variables into account when assessing different cultures. Both warn the assessor to steer clear of assumptions and stereotypes. These two models are both way in which a person can learn more about another culture. They are not just useful for researchers but anyone who would like to know more about a different culture.
Differences: The Purnell Model is based more in research that the dialogical approach. The Purnell model also is based off of information from the larger population of the culture. The dialogical approach will give more detailed information but it is mostly from a smaller sample of the cultural group. The findings from the dialogue may only pertain to a certain demographic of the larger cultural group. This is way both frameworks should be used in a larger research study. Using both allows for more broad findings based on the larger population and a more detailed finding from a smaller demographic of the larger group.
Findings:
Similarities: Both sets of findings came up with a couple of similar answers. From the use of both frameworks it was discovered that this cultural group uses both alternative ways of healing such as meditation, herbal healing, and yoga, and modern medicine like having a primary care physician. According to both sets of findings this cultural group sees the father figure as the head of household most of the time and the family as a unit is incredibly important.
Differences: Research findings from the Purnell model stated that this cultural group is wary of modern medicine and may avoid eye contact. According to Katie, modern medicine is part of their lives just like anything else would be. According to findings from the Purnell model this cultural group does not believe in prenatal care. I know that Katie’s sister just had two kids in the last couple years and she went to their monthly checkups before the babies were born.
There were definitely some similarities and some difference between the findings from each framework. This is why it was important to get information using both methods.
